About Raymonda
Would you like to immerse yourself in a fascinating story of love and courage in a time of war? If so Raymonda is for you. The play takes inspiration from the spirit of Florence Nightingale and the many brave women who worked with her in rudimentary field hospitals during the Crimean war. Tamara Rojo, the remarkable Artistic Director of English National Ballet, has crafted a fresh new version of the classic ballet, an adaptation that's faithful to the glorious score by Alexander Glazunov. You'll adore the wonderful choreography of the ballet genius Marius Petipa, updated with a dramatic new story featuring a heroine who is very much in control of her own destiny.
What's the story of Raymonda?
The original Raymonda is rarely performed in its entirety in the UK, so this is a real treat. It's a brand new version of the story as well as Tamara Rojo’s first go at directing and choreographing, a woman with an already-illustrious career as a dancer and artistic director. The ballet whisks you away to England in 1853. Raymonda has run away from her boring but cosy life to be a nurse in the Crimean War. While there she gets engaged to John, a soldier, but when she develops strong feelings for John's friend Abdur, a dazzling soldier in the Ottoman army, the turmoil inside her heart becomes just as great as the turmoil of the war that surrounds her. Who will win Raymonda's love?
Who is on the Raymonda creative team?
Tamara Rojo CBE directs the show. The costume and set design are by Antony McDonald and the lighting design by Mark Henderson. The dramaturgy comes from Lucinda Coxon and the character dances are by Vadim Sirotin. Choreology research and advice on the Sergeyev notation comes from Doug Fullington. Alexander Glazunov’s original score, arranged by Gavin Sutherland, will be performed live by the English National Ballet Philharmonic Orchestra. Raymonda is co-produced by English National Ballet and Finnish National Ballet. The corporate sponsor is Cunard.
