A Mirror description

About A Mirror

Jonny Lee Miller delighted audiences in Trainspotting. Tanya Reynolds was amazing in Sex Education. Micheal Ward was extraordinary in Top Boy. Now all three star in the transfer of Sam Holcroft’s explosive new play. It scored a hit at the Almeida Theatre, where it premiered, and it’ll be taking to the stage at the Trafalgar Theatre in early 2024.

Revealing strong themes of censorship, authorship and free speech, this is an unusually powerful piece of theatre. It’s a bitingly sarcastic, disturbingly funny comedy created with much wit and mischievousness.

The cast is a delight: Jonny Lee Miller is wonderful as the horrible Čelik, Tanya Reynolds makes an awesome job of the role of the nervy Mei, and Micheal Ward’s Adem is played to confident perfection.

What's the story of A Mirror?

Buy the best theatre tickets for A Mirror from us and whisk yourself away to a dystopian nation where brutal, controlling authorities rule. The play features an author and actors performing a play that’s been refused a permit by the Minister of Culture. So they’re pretending it’s a wedding. Every time the look-out knocks on the door or there’s a siren in the distance, they change the scene back to a wedding.

After a while you realise the main actors are playing two characters each, jumping between them, then it becomes clear that each character is actually playing three roles. This play is subversive on so many levels. It subverts the expected structure of a play, manages to make tyranny blackly funny, and takes a shot at the pretentions of the arts. A highly unusual theatre experience, it’ll stay with you for ages afterwards as you pick away at the plot, trying to make it all fit together. Brilliant.

Who is starring in A Mirror?

The full cast comprises Sara Houghton, Jonny Lee Miller, Aaron Neil, Tanya Reynolds, Geoffrey Streatfeild, Miriam Wakeling and Micheal Ward. This is Jonny Lee Miller’s first London stage appearance in ten years, and that alone inspired a run on tickets at the original venue.

The creative team members are the writer Sam Holcroft, Director Jeremy Herrin, Set and Costume Designer Max Jones and Lighting Designer Azusa Ono. Nick Powell is the Composer and Sound Designer and Jonathan Holby the Fight Director, Jessica Ronane CDG the Casting Director and Clare Foster the Intimacy Director.
