Angel's Bone - English National Opera description
Angel's Bone is an opera like no other, created by the internationally-renowned composer Du Yun and the librettist Royce Vavrek. It tells the story of two fallen angels who are found, battered and beaten, in a couple's back garden. The couple, Mr and Mrs X.E, are suffering from great poverty and their marriage is in bits. They decide to help the angels, so they bring them indoors. But it isn't long before they start to force the angels into grim spiritual and sexual slavery. The opera premiered in New York during 2016 and won the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 2017, an uncomfortable reminder of the horrors of modern-day slavery and human trafficking.
Du Yun is known and loved for her extraordinary music, which blends all sorts of different genres to create something remarkable. Imagine a potent mix of classical, punk, cabaret and more, all directed to perfection by Kip Williams. It delivers an immersive experience as audience members stand throughout the whole show, watching the action as it is projected on screens. Expect a shocking production with a strong emotional impact that'll leave you reeling, horrified by the uncomfortable truths it reveals about cruelty, dehumanisation, exploitation and moral decay. Designer Marg Horwell and conductor Baldur Brönniman are on the creative team and the cast includes Allison Cook, Rodney Earl Clarke, Mariam Wallentin, Matthew McKinney and Keith Pun. Strange, disturbing and superbly dark.
