Bird Grove description
This is the story of Mary Ann Evans. The year is 1841 and she has just reached the age when most women in her position marry. Mary and her beloved dad Robert have just moved to Bird Grove House, and the intention is to marry Mary off as quickly as possible, ideally to a 'suitable' religious man. But Mary has a different life in mind for herself and it isn't long before she starts to challenge her father's plans. Their conflict grows, but Mary remains determined. Ultimately, she decides to change her name and begin writing. The name she chooses is 'George Eliot' and the rest, as they say, is history.
Writer Alexi Kaye Campbell (The Pride, Apologia, Sunset at the Villa Thalia) delivers this wonderful new drama that puts one of the nation's best-loved writers under the spotlight as she navigates the complexities of life as a woman in the mid-1800s. A touching exploration of family ties and self-determination unfolds with Olivier Award-winning Director Anna Ledwich at the helm, the woman who gave us The Billionaire Inside Your Head, Labyrinth, and Olivier nominated productions of Dry Powder and Four Minutes Twelve Seconds. Classy, fascinating and revealing, we expect this brilliant play to be a hit.
