Breaking the Waves - English National Opera description
Breaking the Waves is a powerful contemporary opera by Missy Mazzoli, adapted from Lars von Trier's extraordinary movie, due to premiere at the English National Opera in the London Coliseum. Expect to be carried away by adult themes of faith, heartbreak and loss as the shocking story of Bess McNeill, a deeply devout woman, and her husband Jan unfolds. Bess is severely tested by her husband's accident and subsequent paralysis. He asks her to hook up with strangers for sex, then tell him about it afterwards. Will it help Jan survive or destroy the couple?
Known and loved for its morally ambiguity, emotional intensity and psychological depth, this is without doubt one of the most powerful modern operas of our time. A creative team to reckon with leads the way, along with some of the opera scene's best-loved voices. The Librettist is Royce Vavrek, the director is Tinuke Craig and the conductor is Joana Carneiro. Grammy-nominee Lauren Snouffer enjoys her ENO debut playing the lead role of Bess, Liam James Karai plays Jan, Joanne Evans plays Dodo McNeill, Emma Bell plays Mrs McNeill, and ex-Harewood singer Elgan Llŷr Thomas plays Dr Richardson. Prepare to be blown away!
