Get on your horse and ride into the sunset! It’s fantastic to hear that the popular West End star Emily Benjamin is going to lead the cast of the brand new award-winning Wild West show Bronco Billy – the Musical. The fun is due in London in early 2024, from 23rd January to 7th April, and theatreland is on fire with anticipation. The US premiere attracted great critical acclaim, and we fully expect the same from the West End production.
Emily Benjamin has played the alternate Sally Bowles in the award-winning production of Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club in London since it first opened in 2021, with credits including Bat Out of Hell and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe behind her. She plays the starring female role in Bronco Billy, a story inspired by and based on the smash hit 1980 Clint Eastwood movie of the same name. First hitting the stage in LA during 2019, it won the Ovation Awards for Best Book for an Original Musical and Best Lyrics/ Composition of an Original Musical the year after.
What's the story of Bronco Billy?
The musical follows a group of Wild West roustabouts whose lives change when the travelling circus’s leader meets a runaway heiress. Bronco Billy McCoy, the musical’s namesake, is a stuntman in his own show. The circus’s finale sees him blindfolded, shooting balloons on a revolving wooden disc with a woman in the centre. When she moves her leg at the last second and gets cut, she leaves the show. Low ticket sales mean the group haven’t been paid for six months. Then a runaway heiress turns up and things start to change. Will Billy’s circus end up a roaring success, or will it fail?

The creative team includes scenic design by Amy Jane Cook, costume design by Sarah Mercade, choreography by Alexzandra Sarmiento, and lighting design by Nick Richings. The sound design is by Andrew Johnson, illusion design by John Bulleid, fight and intimacy direction by Rachel Bown-Williams and Ruth Cooper-Brown of RC-Annie Ltd. The associate director is Amber Sinclair-Case and the music supervisor is David O, with associate production by Danny Hackin and casting by Will Burton.
