A Christmas Carol: A Ghost Story description
A Christmas Carol - The Ghost Story is back in town again, fast becoming a festive West End classic. Welcome to Mark Gatiss's (The League of Gentlemen, Sherlock) extraordinary version of Charles Dickens' 1843 novella, a story that might be more than 180 years old but hasn't lost any of its power. This spooky show is wonderfully sinister, a story of redemption and goodwill told in a particularly spine-chilling way thanks to Gatiss's extraordinary imagination. We all know the plot: It's Xmas and the cruel miser Ebenezer Scrooge's life is about to change forever thanks to a shocking visit by the ghost of his long dead ex-business partner Jacob Marley. Marley is chained up for eternity as a punishment for his greed, and Scrooge faces the same grisly fate... unless he can change his wicked ways.
First produced at the Nottingham Playhouse in 2021, the show soon transferred to the Alexandra Palace with Nicholas Farrell as Scrooge and Gatiss himself as Marley. It was revived at the original venue before another Ally Pally transfer, with Keith Allen as Scrooge and Peter Forbes as Marley. In 2024/5, it played at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre with Matthew Cottle as Scrooge and Rufus Hound as Marley. Back at London's beloved Ally Pally for a third time, the fun is directed by Adam Penford with Design by Paul Wills, lighting design by Philip Gladwell, sound design by Ella Wahlström, video design by Nina Dunn, movement Direction by Georgina Lamb and music composed by Tingying Dong. The perfect winter's tale for anyone who fancies a festive experience with a difference.
