About the Show
A whaling vessel has been held fast in the polar ice for months. Supplies are running low, the crew are dying one by one, and the men still on their feet are running out of reasons to keep the order of the ship. As mutiny builds below decks, the sailors begin to share the same visions - which may be scurvy, may be the effect of the endless dark, or may be something closer to redemption.
Dogstar is a world premiere playing in Hampstead Downstairs, the theatre's studio space. It is a darkly comic chamber piece about the forces that shape people's lives in the most extreme circumstances. The production has an age guidance of 14+ and contains strong language, sudden loud noises and themes of death and illness.
Cast and Creatives
The play is written by Daisy Hall, a member of the Royal Court's long-form playwriting group, whose first play Bellringers was a finalist for the Women's Prize for Playwriting in 2023 and sold out at Hampstead Downstairs in 2024 after playing the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. It is directed by Lucy Morrison, Associate Director of the Royal Court from 2014 to 2023, whose work there included That Is Not Who I Am by Lucy Kirkwood and Scenes with girls by Miriam Battye, and who has directed The Animal Kingdom and Akedah at Hampstead Theatre.
