Don Giovanni - Royal Ballet and Opera description
Don Giovanni, Mozart's masterpiece of moral ambiguity, takes the Royal Opera House stage in a production that confronts the opera's central paradox head-on: how can a man so destructive be so utterly compelling? Based on the legend of the libertine Don Juan, the opera follows Don Giovanni through a night of seduction and flight, murder and mockery, until the marble statue of his victim rises to demand repentance — and he defiantly refuses. Mozart's score, written in collaboration with Lorenzo da Ponte, wraps this dark tale in music of irresistible beauty and dramatic urgency.
Director Kasper Holten — whose tenure as Director of Opera at the Royal Opera House produced some of the most talked-about productions of recent years — brings a theatrical vision of rare clarity and power to this staging. A former director of the Royal Danish Opera, Holten is recognised internationally for his ability to reveal new depths in operatic classics. At the heart of Don Giovanni lies one of opera's greatest mysteries: why, knowing what awaits him, does he never relent? Come and decide for yourself.
