Zoey and Ethan have the rest of their lives figured out - except whether or not to have a baby. Meanwhile, Zoey's younger sister Trish already has her hands full with two kids, or three if you count her new boyfriend, Matt. Against a backdrop of falling birth rates and the everyday chaos of adulthood, two couples who were once convinced they could have it all find themselves asking what they truly want - and whether there is ever a right time.

Expecting is a world premiere and the third production of the Mainstage Season 26/27 at Riverside Studios. It is written by Scott Elmegreen and Drew Fornarola, who previously co-wrote Straight, a New York Times Critics' Pick; Elmegreen teaches at the University of Chicago, while Fornarola has written for DreamWorks' Shrek and VeggieTales franchises and won the 2024 Artie Award for Best New Play. It is directed by Andy Sandberg, a Tony Award-winning producer and director and Artistic Director of the Hermitage Artist Retreat. Casting is to be announced.
