FANGIRLS description

About Fangirls

FANGIRLS is a multi-award winning comedy musical from Yve Blake, a glittering star Down Under and a respected creative spirit over here.

With a plot inspired by real interviews with hundreds of teen music fans, Blake wrote the musical in response to Zayn Malik’s leaving the boy band One Direction, and the way the media framed the reactions of the fans.

As Time Out said about the Sydney production: “Not being dramatic, but this pop-musical will probably change your life" . Limelight said we should “Believe the hype. The FANGIRLS phenomenon is real!”. ArtsHub Sydney said “FANGIRLS is sure to become an iconic hit” and Guardian Australia claimed it’s a “love letter to feeling so much you just have to scream”.

As Rachel O’Riordan, Artistic Director & CEO of Lyric Hammersmith Theatre said, “FANGIRLS will be a riotous night at the theatre and we couldn’t be more thrilled to coproduce the UK premiere with Sonia Friedman Productions. Our beautiful auditorium will transcend into one of the best pop concerts you’ve ever been to. The Lyric was built for musicals like FANGIRLS which is going to be a once-in-a-lifetime euphoric experience across West London and beyond.”

What's the story of Fangirls?

This show proved a huge hit in Australia, a music-infused musical about female fandom, the risks around underestimating young girls, the boy band phenomenon, and the power of teen love. Premiering in Brisbane during 2019, it was directed by Paige Rattray, who is directing the UK Lyric Hammersmith production as well, following a legendary Sydney and Australian tour in 2021.

FANGIRLS won a prestigious 2020 AWGIE Award for Music Theatre from the Australian Writers' Guild. It also won two 2019 Sydney Theatre Awards including Best Production of a Mainstage Musical and won Best Musical at the 2019 Queensland Matilda Awards. Now it’s due in the West End with a UK premiere at the Lyric Hammersmith Theatre in London for July 2024.
