Fences description
It's powerful stuff. It's also an important play with numerous accolades including the 1987 Pulitzer prize, Tony awards, and a host of high profile award nominations. Widely regarded as one of the most important pieces of US drama, you won't want to miss Fences by August Wilson. The plot centres on Troy Maxson, a former baseball player who struggles with racial discrimination as he battles to accept his family's aspirations. When teenaged son Cory leaves a secure job to start a career in American football, Troy is convinced he won't succeed. In the end Troy's refusal to accept help, and his inability to soften his rigid views on what success means, have tragic consequences.
Exploring themes of racism, pride, family, unrealised dreams and the conflict between the generations, the play reveals how past experiences affect current relationships and influence our future potential. The creative team includes Director Daniel Bailey, Set and Costume Designer Lily Arnold, Composer and Sound Designer Khalil Madovi, and Lighting Designer Jai Morjaria, Movement Director Shelley Maxwell, Fight Director Kev McCurdy, Design Associate Emily King and Casting Director Heather Basten CDG. A compelling, moving story.
