Glorious Madness description

About the Show

Glorious Madness is a new British musical built on the songs of Joan Armatrading. Iman Qureshi has written an original love story for the stage, and Armatrading's catalogue is heard inside it, carrying the narrative rather than sitting alongside it.

The production is a world premiere and one of eight new works in the National Theatre's 2027 programme. It is the first stage musical drawn from Armatrading's songwriting, and it runs in the Dorfman Theatre, the smallest and most flexible of the National Theatre's three auditoriums.

Cast and Creatives

The music and lyrics are by Joan Armatrading, whose recordings include Love and Affection, Down to Zero and Drop the Pilot. The book is by Iman Qureshi, whose The Funeral Director won the Papatango New Writing Prize. Phyllida Lloyd directs, having staged Mamma Mia!, Tina - The Tina Turner Musical and an all-female Shakespeare trilogy at the Donmar Warehouse.

Casting has not yet been announced. The production is made with KPPL Productions.

Why You Should Watch It

A songwriter's catalogue given a story of its own, staged by a director with a long record in musical theatre. Book tickets to see it at the National Theatre.
