High Society description
Roll back time, and millions of people were utterly spellbound by the 1956 movie starring Grace Kelly, Bing Crosby, and Frank Sinatra. The classic play, The Philadelphia Story by Philip Barry, sits at the heart of it all. This is High Society, in town for a short run starring Helen George as the glamorous social butterfly Tracy Lord and national treasure Felicity Kendal as her mum, Mother Lord. The scene is Tracy's posh Long Island wedding to her second husband, an elegant affair. But the whole thing soon descends into chaos thanks to her ex-husband turning up and a nosy tabloid reporter on the scent of a scandal. Who will Tracy give her heart to?
You'll recognise some, if not all, of the show tunes. Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, I love Paris, Just One of Those Things and True Love are just a handful from an unforgettable score, played live by a full orchestra. This new West End revival of the classic musical features an enormous cast of 28, including Helen George of Call the Midwife and The King and I fame and Felicity Kendal, whose classic performances include TV's The Good Life, and Anything Goes. Rachel Kavanaugh directs, with Choreography from Anthony Van Laast and musical supervision by Stephen Ridley. Music and lyrics by Cole Porter, a book by Arthur Kopit, and additional lyrics by Susan Birkenhead complete the picture, a show it's hard to resist. Beautiful!
