HMS Pinafore description
Gilbert and Sullivan’s beloved 1878 comic opera HMS Pinafore is on stage at the London Coliseum for Christmas, a festive family treat that never fails to please. Directed by Cal McCrystal and conducted by Matthew Kofi Waldren, it takes a hilariously satirical look at love, social class, and the British Navy. Neal Davies stars as Sir Joseph, with John Savournin as Captain Corcoran, Thomas Atkins as Ralph Rackstraw, and Henna Mun as Josephine. The musical accompaniment comes from ENO's brilliant orchestra.
A rousing nautical love triangle awaits you as the players explore the tricky waters of class, rank, patriotism, and power. The scene is the quarter deck of HMS Pinafore, at anchor off the coast of Portsmouth. Josephine, Captain Corcoran's daughter, has fallen in love with a sailor called Ralph Rackstraw. But her pompous father thinks Ralph, as an ordinary seaman, isn't good enough for his precious offspring. He'd like her to marry the naval commander Sir Joseph Porter. Who will get their way?
