How The Other Half Loves description
How The Other Half Loves, Alan Ayckbourn's landmark 1969 farce, receives a major new production at the Old Vic Theatre. When Fiona Foster and Bob Phillips — each conducting a secret affair — separately recruit the hapless Featherstones as their alibi, the result is a mounting catastrophe of domestic confusion, crossed wires, and social humiliation that takes the comedy of manners to its dizzying, glorious extreme. It is the play that cemented Ayckbourn's reputation as Britain's greatest comic playwright.
Directed by Phillip Breen and starring Roger Allam and Dorothy Atkinson, this production revives Ayckbourn's famous composite set — two overlaid living rooms allowing simultaneous action in two homes — in the intimate In The Round configuration the play was written for. Over five decades on from its world premiere at Scarborough's Theatre in the Round, How The Other Half Loves remains as razor-sharp and riotously funny as ever. A must-see at the Old Vic this summer.
