Iphigenie en Tauride - English National Opera description
Iphigénie and her brother Oreste are heirs to one of ancient Greek mythology's most bloody families. They've always been violent, as far back as anyone can remember. Welcome to Iphigenie en Tauride, a powerful, rarely-staged opera presented by ENO at the London Coliseum, a rare treat for everyone who adores great opera and one of the composer Christoph Willibald Gluck's best masterworks. What happens when Iphigénie is exiled to a desolate island temple and he's sent to the edge of madness, and both think the other is dead?
Iphigénie is forced to serve a ruthless leader. All she can think about is finding her way home, hopeful for a reunion. Then a stranger turns up with news about the family's downfall and she is almost overwhelmed by despair. But all is not lost – is there more to the stranger than meets the eye? The opera enjoys its ENO debut with a brand new staging, with Olivier award-winning director Lyndsey Turner at the heart of it all. Sung it in the original French with a libretto by Nicolas-François Guillard and English surtitles projected above the stage, David Bates plays Tauride on his ENO debut. Christine Rice sings Iphigénie and Oreste is sung by Jacques Imbrailo. Opera magic at its finest!
