Jaja's African Hair Braiding description

The location for the gorgeous Tony Award-winning comedy Jaja's African Hair Braiding is a hairdressing salon in New York City where African immigrants skillfully braid their customers' hair. In London for its UK premiere at Lyric Hammersmith Theatre, the play whisks us away to an intimate, hot and sticky summer's day when the hair braiders and their customers exchange laughter and secrets, lies and betrayals, heartbreak and big dreams. This gorgeous celebration of community follows on from School Girls or The African Mean Girls Play, which won the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Play, also written by Jocelyn Bioh and directed by Monique Touko.

Jocelyn Bioh is a Ghanaian-American writer and actor, Monique Touko won Best Director at The Stage Debut Awards 2022 for Malindadzimu at the Hampstead Theatre. Now they're back with another critically acclaimed production designed to delight. Set Design from Paul Wills and Wigs, Hair and Make-Up Design by Cynthia De La Rosa. The Lighting Designer is Simisola Majekodunmi, the Sound Designer is Tony Gayle and the Movement Director is Kloé Dean. Casting Director Julia Horan and Assistant Director Gráinne Flynn complete the creative team. Warm hearted with more than a touch of spice, it's a play to remember.
