Kenrex description
A West End musical about a dangerous sociopath, his brutal murder, and the townspeople who hated and feared him? It sounds extraordinary – and it is. This is Kenrex, a show that has already achieved a critically acclaimed run in London. Now it's back in town starring the brilliant Jack Holden (TV series Marriage and Ten Percent, West End shows Cruise and War Horse), who was Olivier nominated for Cruise, his popular one-man show. This time around, he weaves the bizarre story of the true crime that rocked the town of Skidmore, Missouri, USA on 10th July 1981, where a local man was shot dead in broad daylight.
Sixty people witnessed the crime, but nobody called an ambulance or offered the victim help, and they refused to tell the police what had happened. As it turned out, Ken McElroy was the town bully. He'd been accused of numerous awful crimes over the years, including assault, molesting children, statutory rape, arson, burglary, and animal cruelty, but he'd always managed to avoid prosecution. There's a wonderful live Americana soundtrack from John Patrick Elliott. The show is co-written by Holden and Ed Stambollouian, who directs. Design by Anisha Fields, Lighting and video design by Joshua Pharo, Sound design by Giles Thomas, and Movement direction by Sarah Golding complete the creative team, and the Production Manager is James Anderton. An unusually compelling musical!
