Kiss Me Kate description

About Kiss Me Kate

The brilliant actor Adrian Dunbar and equally amazing Broadway star Stephanie J Block star in a new production of Kiss Me Kate, on at the Barbican for Summer 2024. Directed by Tony Award-winner Bartlett Sher, it’s being produced by Trafalgar Theatre Productions.

Kiss Me Kate is a wonderful exploration of Shakespeare’s wit and an homage to the emotional rollercoaster that a career in musical theatre represents. During the production of a musical version of William Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew, the conflict between Fred Graham, the show’s director, producer, and star, and his leading lady and ex-wife Lilli Vanessi, increases to brilliant effect.

As the show’s producer of the show Howard Panter said, “I’m delighted to be working with Adrian, Stephanie and Bart to bring this classic, hilarious golden-age musical comedy to the Barbican next summer. Cole Porter’s timeless masterpiece has everything you want: it’s fun, infectious and pure entertainment. This, like Anything Goes, will be the perfect summer treat for London audiences this year.” Adrian Dunbar and Stephanie J. Block are, by all accounts, equally thrilled.

What's the story of Kiss Me Kate?

First produced on Broadway in 1948, Kiss Me Kate’s previous UK productions include Opera North’s award-winning 2018 production at the London Coliseum, and Trevor Nunn’s famous version starring Hannah Waddingham, Adam Garcia and Clive Rowe, star of the Chichester Festival Theatre and the West End’s Old Vic in 2013. Being such a classic musical it’s still regularly produced around the world, loved by amateur and professional actors alike.

Summer 2024 just got a lot brighter!”

Dunbar joins a company of more than fifty, including a full orchestra. Stephanie J. Block is a US actor and singer best known for her work on Broadway, creating the role of Liza Minnelli in The Boy from Oz. She was the first actor to play the role in the 2005 US tour. Prepare for brilliance!
