La Traviata description
La Traviata means 'she who strays from the path'. This is the world's most frequently-performed opera, and Violetta is one of opera's best-loved characters. Add Verdi's sublime music and this production is pretty hard to resist, whether you're a seasoned opera fan or new to the experience. You'll meet the gorgeous Parisian courtesan Violetta, whose life is all about lavish parties, beautiful clothes and thrilling flirtations. Returning to public life after an illness, she meets handsome Alfredo Germont and they fall deeply in love. Violetta tears herself unwillingly from the glittering lights of Paris to follow her lover to the countryside, but Alfredo's father turns up and persuades her to leave and save his son from scandal. Will Alfredo be able to win her back?
Verdi's beloved songs "Could it be him", "I must always be free", and the famous "Brindisi chorus", aka The drinking song, are as famous as the story itself, making this a great introduction for newcomers to the genre. Antonello Manacorda and Giacomo Sagripanti conduct three sparkling casts, including the dream team Ermonela Jaho, Pretty Yende and Rachel Willis-Sørensen. The director is Richard Eyre and the Libretto is by Francesco Maria Piave, with Design by Bob Crowley, Lighting Design by Jean Kalman and Movement Direction by Jane Gibson. Add it all up and you have an opera classic to remember.
