Lemons Lemons Lemons Lemons Lemons description

Did you know we each speak around 123 million words in our lives? It’s just as well they don’t run out – but what would happen if we were restricted in the number of words we could say to each other?

Lemons Lemons Lemons Lemons Lemons is part tender romcom, looking at what we say, how we say it, and what happens when we can't say anything anymore. It’s also part dystopian horror, set in a time when an extreme political party wins an election and slaps a strict 140 a day word limit on everyone in the country. It’s the hugely talented Sam Steiner's debut play, which enjoyed great acclaim when first staged at Warwick Arts Centre in 2015, winning three Judges' Awards at the National Student Drama Festival. Since then it has lit up the Latitude Festival, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and Camden People's Theatre. Now it’s on in the West End for 2023, a well-deserved move for a play that feels horribly relevant to our times.

What's the story of LEMONS, LEMONS, LEMONS, LEMONS, LEMONS?

The structure of the play moves between moments early in the relationship, into the build-up to the government’s frightening ‘Quietude Bill’, and explores what happens when the new law is in place. The two hand play involves Bernadette, a lawyer, and her lover Oliver, a struggling musician with political inclinations. He wants to protest about the new law, she’s more inclined to make the best of things. There are some delicate and tender moments, as well as intense arguments and disagreements as the couple tries to communicate and keep their relationship alive. It’s difficult when you’re forced to ration your words, and particularly hard to accept when you realise you’ve wasted some of your precious daily store.

As the playwright Sam Steiner said, "Writing 'Lemons Lemons Lemons Lemons Lemons' taught me how to be a playwright. The opportunity to revisit and grow the play all these years later and bring it to a larger audience with Josie, Aidan, Jenna and an alarmingly inspiring creative team is thrilling and confounding in equal measure. I hope it speaks to now in a way that I couldn't have predicted then. And I hope to keep learning."

Who is starring in LEMONS, LEMONS, LEMONS, LEMONS, LEMONS?

The show stars Jenna Coleman, who wowed audiences in The Serpent on BBC One, and in All My Sons at The Old Vic. She also played Queen Victoria in the hit TV series. Aidan Turner has delighted us in The Suspect on ITV, in The Lieutenant of Inishmore in the West End, and in TV’s Poldark. Both are set to make a magical job of portraying Sam Steiner's hilarious and provocative play.
