About the Show
London, 1940. Cinderella keeps house for her stepmother Sybil and a family with little use for her, until a wounded RAF pilot, Harry, arrives at the door. A guardian angel in white sends the pair to the Cafe de Paris, where they dance through a single night before a direct hit tears them apart, leaving Cinderella to search a bombed city with one shoe to go on.
Matthew Bourne's Cinderella is danced to Sergei Prokofiev's score and built around a real event, the bombing of the Cafe de Paris on 8 March 1941. It premiered at the Piccadilly Theatre in 1997 and returns for its 30th anniversary, forming New Adventures' 24th Christmas season at Sadler's Wells from 1 December. Lez Brotherston's designs won an Olivier Award, and the running time is two hours and 20 minutes including two intervals.
Cast and Creatives
The production is choreographed and directed by Matthew Bourne, whose Swan Lake won both Olivier and Tony Awards. Set and costume design is by Olivier Award-winner Lez Brotherston, lighting by Olivier Award-winner Neil Austin, video and projection design by Duncan McLean and sound design by Paul Groothuis, carrying the audience into Prokofiev's score and the sounds of wartime London.
It is danced by the company of New Adventures, which created the piece in 1997 under its former name, Adventures in Motion Pictures. Casting for the anniversary season is announced by the company ahead of the run.
