Nevermore description

About the Show

Nevermore – The Imaginary Life and Mysterious Death of Edgar Allan Poe follows the American writer Edgar Allan Poe as he boards a steamship in Richmond, Virginia, bound for New York on a rainy night. He never arrives. Instead, the journey carries him back through memory and imagination, into the tragedy, addiction, poverty and loss that shaped his life and writing, until he sees his own life as the darkest of his tales.

Catalyst Theatre of Edmonton, Canada, created the musical play in 2009 for the bicentenary of Poe's birth. It has since played across Canada, at London's Barbican in 2010 and Off-Broadway at New World Stages in 2015, where it received three Lucille Lortel Award nominations, including Outstanding Musical. The New York Times described it as "exquisitely stylish... a gothic fantasia". It opens at Charing Cross Theatre in July 2027 for a limited season.

Cast and Creatives

Jonathan Christenson, artistic director of Catalyst Theatre, wrote the book, music and lyrics and directs. His work has won Canada's Sterling and Betty Mitchell Awards and Scotland's Fringe First and Herald Angel Awards. Sets, costumes and lighting are by Bretta Gerecke, whose credits include Cirque du Soleil, the National Theatre and the RSC, with choreography by Laura Krewski. Krewski and Gerecke both received Lucille Lortel nominations for the show.

Casting for the London production is by Neil Rutherford, formerly Head of Casting at the Ambassador Theatre Group, and the show is produced by M. Kilburg Reedy for MKR Entertainment Group, Martin Hummel and Catalyst Theatre.

Why You Should Watch It
