Noughts & Crosses description

The Noughts and Crosses series of novels is widely regarded as one of the most powerful plots of the 21st century. Now Malorie Blackman's dazzling story is on stage in the capital for a strictly limited run at the Hackney Empire. We meet Sephy and Callum, who are deeply in love. The problem is, their feelings are forbidden by the racist society they live in. Sephy is a Cross, one of the dark-skinned people in control. Callum is a Nought, one of the oppressed paler-skinned people. The lovers face a gaping racial and social divide. When violence breaks out, the couple find themselves in dreadful danger.

Beautifully adapted for the stage by Sabrina Mahfouz, the drama is presented by Pilot Theatre in association with Northern Stage. Director Simon Kenny joins Designer Esther Richardson to create something special, a wonderfully moving love story with a feeling of Romeo and Juliet about it, where star-crossed lovers risk everything. As their powerful bond gets stronger, can Sephy and Callum find their way through the danger to a place of safety where their love, loyalty and identity are acceptable?
