Operation Mincemeat description

About Operation Mincemeat – An unbelievable true story

Make your way to one of Covent Garden’s most intimate venues, the Fortune Theatre, for a musical like no other, a fresh telling of an extraordinary true World War Two story. The plot has already inspired a movie starring Colin Firth, now it’s a stage musical that has attracted significant critical acclaim. Following sold-out runs at New Diorama Theatre in 2019, Southwark Playhouse during 2020 – 2022, and an extended Riverside Studios run in summer 2022, Operation Mincemeat is on its way to theatreland for a well-deserved West End season.

The show won The Stage Debut award for Best Composer/Lyricist, the Off-West End award for Best Company Ensemble and was listed in the Observer’s Top 10 shows of the year. At the moment it is being featured in the V&A museum’s Re:Imagining Musicals display.

What's the story of Operation Mincemeat ?

Roll back time to 1943, when British secret agents created an elaborate plan to mislead Germany about allied invasion plans.

At the height of World War Two, British Intelligence was determined to convince the Nazis that allied forces were going to invade Greece instead of Sicily. The plan was code named Operation Mincemeat. It involved planting forged documents on a dead body then setting him adrift in neutral Spanish waters, hoping he’d end up in German hands. The briefcase attached to the dead man’s wrist identified him as ‘William Martin’, a Royal Marine officer, complete with convincing paperwork about Britain’s secret plans.

The initiative worked, the intelligence found its way to Hitler himself, and he subsequently send divisions of tanks, artillery and boats to defend Greece, Sardinia and the Balkans. When Allied troops invaded Sicily on 10th July, the Germans were totally unprepared.

The corpse’s detailed back-story was responsible for the ruse’s success. Two naval intelligence officers, Ewen Montagu and Charles Cholmondeley, built a convincing history for the body, which actually belonged to a homeless Welsh man called Glyndwr Michael, who had died after eating rat poison. No wonder theatre tickets for Operation Mincemeat are predicted to sell fast.
