About the Show

The summer of 1984: the miners' strike is in its second year, families in the coalfields are going hungry, and a group of lesbian and gay activists in London decide to raise money for them. Calling themselves Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners, they take their collection to a pit village in the Dulais Valley in South Wales, and two communities with almost nothing in common begin an alliance neither of them expected.

Pride is a new British musical adapted from the 2014 film, with an original score that draws on protest anthems, pop, rock, disco and Welsh choral singing. It comes to the Bridge Theatre after sold-out seasons at the Sherman Theatre in Cardiff and the National Theatre in London.

Cast and Creatives

The book and lyrics are by Stephen Beresford, who wrote the screenplay for the original film, and the production is directed by Matthew Warchus, artistic director of the Old Vic, who directed the film and whose stage work includes Matilda the Musical and God of Carnage. Set and costume design is by Bunny Christie, with choreography by Lizzi Gee, lighting by Hugh Vanstone, sound by Bobby Aitken, orchestrations by Christopher Nightingale and Tom Kelly, and additional orchestrations by Josh Cohen and DJ Walde.

The cast includes Samuel Barnett (The History Boys) as Jonathan, Matthew Durkan as Mike, Gillian Elisa as Gwen, Chris Jenkins as Gethin, Darren Lawrence as Cliff, Kirsty Malpass as Hefina, Sarah Pugh as Siân, Caroline Sheen as Maureen, Courtney Stapleton (Six, Beauty and the Beast) as Steph and Matthew Woodyatt as Dai.
