Romeo & Juliet description

This happens so rarely it’s a West End phenomenon we might not see again for years. Tom Holland's West End show Romeo & Juliet sold out in two hours as more than sixty thousand fans bought tickets. We’re keeping our fingers crossed that it’ll revive, extend or return!

A superstar director and an extraordinary actor

Holland plays Romeo Montague in this ‘pulsating’ new vision of Shakespeare’s romantic tragedy. The rest of the cast is yet to be announced, with the identity of the actor in the role of Juliet eagerly awaited.

After his success as one of Marvel’s leading actors, with six smash hit Spider Man movies under his belt, Holland is back on the London stage where he made his debut as Billy Elliot. Having been spotted by the musical’s choreographer and training in ballet for two years, he took the role of Billy’s best mate in 2008. Later the same year he won the lead role. Then, a couple of years later, he headed for Hollywood. Five years on he landed the Spider Man role and as they say, the rest is history. It’s fantastic to see him back in theatreland.

The director is the exceptional Jamie Lloyd, darling of the West End and Broadway. No wonder this fresh new version of the Bard’s immortal tale of lovers and fighters is inspiring so many people. Described using the tagline ‘Violent delights have violent ends’, it’s predicted to be something very special.

British theatre director Jamie Lloyd is known and loved for his recent production of Sunset Boulevard, starring Nicole Scherzinger, along with his version of Ibsen’s 1879 classic A Doll’s House starring Jessica Chastain. They’re just two of an impressive list of stage hits that have shot him to directorship stardom.

In 2014 he became the 20th Most Powerful Person in British Theatre, awarded the accolade by The Stage in its yearly Stage 100 list, the youngest director to win a place since Sam Mendes. In 2020 he was named the 9th most influential person in British Theatre in the Stage 100 list. In his words, ‘Tom Holland is one of the greatest, most exciting young actors in the world. It is an honour to welcome him back to the West End.’

Romeo & Juliet – The plot

Their families hate one another and the town of Verona is sick and tired of their feuding. But when Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet meet, love blooms. Thanks to a series of misunderstandings, botched plans and tragically crossed wires, both youngsters end up committing suicide. The story has inspired theatregoers since the 1590s, and its power never fades.

The creative team involves text editing by Nima Taleghani, Set and Costume Design from Soutra Gilmour and Lighting Design by Jon Clark. The Sound Designers are Ben and Max Ringham and the Video Design and Cinematography are by Nathan Amzi and Joe Ransom. The Composer is Michael ‘Mikey J’ Asante, the Casting Director Stuart Burt CDG, and Movement Direction comes from Sarah Golding and Yukiko Masui.
