About the Show
Shen Yun presents a series of short pieces of classical Chinese dance, ethnic and folk dance and story-based dance, each introduced by a pair of presenters. The stories are drawn from Chinese legends, historical episodes and classical literature, in a programme the company describes as a journey through 5,000 years of Chinese culture, presented as "China before communism".
The production combines live orchestral music, costumes made for each piece and animated digital backdrops that interact with the dancers on stage, a technique the company has patented. Song lyrics are translated and projected on the backdrop, and the presenters explain the dance form and the orchestra as the evening goes on. The performance runs for about 2 hours 20 minutes, including one interval.
Cast and Creatives
The show is created by Shen Yun Performing Arts, a classical Chinese dance and music company founded in New York in 2006. Its name, written 神韻 in Chinese, can be translated as "the beauty of divine beings dancing". The choreography, music and costumes are made by the company's own artists, and a new programme is staged for each touring season.
No individual stars are billed. The performances are given by an ensemble of dancers trained in classical Chinese dance, with vocal and instrumental soloists and the company's orchestra, which combines a Western symphony orchestra with traditional Chinese instruments such as the erhu and the pipa.
