Sister Act - Wimbledon description
About the Show
Sister Act tells the story of Deloris Van Cartier, a disco singer in late-1970s Philadelphia who witnesses a murder and is placed in protective custody inside a convent. Clashing with the strict Mother Superior, she takes over the sisters' struggling choir and teaches the nuns to sing with soul, but the choir's sudden popularity puts her hiding place at risk.
The musical is based on the 1992 film starring Whoopi Goldberg. It had its West End premiere at the London Palladium in 2009, and the Broadway production received five Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical. The score takes its sound from Motown, soul and disco. Earlier productions were well received by critics, with The Independent describing the show as "an irresistibly great time". This new UK and Ireland tour opens at the New Wimbledon Theatre.
Cast and Creatives
The music is by Alan Menken, winner of eight Academy Awards and a Tony Award, whose scores include Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin. The lyrics are by Glenn Slater (The Little Mermaid, Tangled), and the book is by Cheri Steinkellner and Bill Steinkellner, with additional book material by Douglas Carter Beane (Xanadu).
Craig Revel Horwood, a judge on Strictly Come Dancing who has played Miss Hannigan in Annie in the West End, plays Mother Superior (except at Friday and Saturday performances). Paul Chuckle, known from the children's series ChuckleVision, plays Monsignor O'Hara, and Zoe Birkett, whose West End credits include Moulin Rouge! The Musical and TINA - The Tina Turner Musical, plays Deloris at selected performances.
