Speculations description

About the Show

Set in New York in 1965, Speculations follows journalist Dorothy Kilgallen as she investigates the deaths of Marilyn Monroe, John F. Kennedy and Lee Harvey Oswald. Refusing to accept the official accounts, she pursues the story from Hollywood to the White House and the New Orleans underworld, and uncovers links between powerful figures that put her own safety in danger.

The play is a political thriller receiving its world premiere at the Marylebone Theatre, presented by Wild Yak and the Marylebone Theatre. It is based on a real figure: Kilgallen was a well-known reporter and television personality whose own death in 1965 is still debated.

Cast and Creatives

The play is written by Torben Betts, author of Invincible, Muswell Hill and Murder in the Dark, whose The Unconquered won Best New Play at the Critics' Awards for Theatre in Scotland. It is directed by Sir Trevor Nunn, former artistic director of the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre and the Tony Award-winning director of Cats and Les Misérables. Design is by Lee Newby, lighting by Johanna Town and sound and music by Gregory Clarke.

Janie Dee leads the cast as Kilgallen. She is a two-time Olivier Award winner, for Carousel and Comic Potential, and has appeared in Follies at the National Theatre and in the film Official Secrets.
