Springwood description
Now and again a single, seminal incident changes the world. This is one of those times. Springwood is a brand new play by Richard Nelson, the Olivier and Tony Award-winning playwright who gave us Farewell to the Theatre and Goodnight Children Everywhere. It's directed by the brilliant actor, presenter and author Stanley Tucci (Broadway's three-Tony nominated Lend Me a Tenor), who is directing a show in London for the first time. And the story is based on the movie Hyde Park on Hudson. As you can already tell, this play is something special.
Roll back time to 1939 when the world was on the brink of war. In a country house in North America, Britain's entire future is at stake. This is the first time a British monarch has visited the US, and it's King George 6th's one and only chance to convince President Roosevelt to support us as conflict approaches. But the two men and the countries they lead are very different indeed. Will they be able to find common ground despite everything? The result is a beautifully-observed cultural clash revealing the secrets, doubts, fears and indiscretions of two powerful leaders and their wives. Not to be missed.
