About the Show
New Orleans, 1936. Violet Venable is determined to protect the reputation of her late son Sebastian, who died abroad the previous summer. Her niece Catharine Holly was with him and tells a different story, and Violet has the means to have that story silenced. A young doctor is left to decide whose account he believes.
Suddenly Last Summer is a one-act play, first staged in 1958 on a double bill with Something Unspoken and filmed the following year from a screenplay by Gore Vidal. It is revived far less often than Tennessee Williams' best-known works, and this production runs in the Olivier Theatre, the largest of the National Theatre's three auditoriums.
Cast and Creatives
The play is by Tennessee Williams. It is directed by Michael Grandage, who ran the Donmar Warehouse for ten years, won a Tony Award for Red and returns to the National Theatre after more than fifteen years away.
Emma Corrin, a Golden Globe winner for The Crown and seen on stage in Orlando and Anna X, appears alongside Harriet Walter, an Olivier Award winner whose credits include The House of Bernarda Alba at the National Theatre and Succession.
