Sunny Afternoon description
It has been off stage for almost a decade, and it is such a joy to see it back in the West End! You'll love Sunny Afternoon – The Kinks Musical, a jukebox musical jammed with chart toppers from one of Britain's most popular 1960s bands. The show tells the band's story from rags to riches, UK chart triumphs to a ban in the puritan USA, a tale of fame, family and standing up for yourself. Four years in development, the show premiered in May 2014 at Hampstead Theatre before going on to win four 2015 Olivier Awards, including Best New Musical and Outstanding Achievement in Music for Ray Davies. A dazzling 2016/17 sell-out tour of the UK and Ireland, plus a two-year West End run, sealed the deal.
Right on the edge of the swinging sixties, Ray Davies and his band The Kinks were transformed from a local band into an international phenomenon. Covering the highs and lows, creative clashes, personal problems and court cases that bedevilled the group, it is stacked with smash hit Kinks tunes including You Really Got Me, Lola, Waterloo Sunset and All Day and All of the Night. The Music and Lyrics are by Ray Davies, the Book by Joe Penhall and Direction by Edward Hall. The show is designed by Miriam Buether with choreography by Adam Cooper, lighting design by Rick Fisher and sound design by Matt McKenzie. The musical and vocal adaptations are by Ray Davies and Elliott Ware, based on original Kinks’ recordings, and West End legends Sonia Friedman Productions and ATG Productions are the producers. A joyful musical to remember.
