About the Show
Set in Germany in 1940, The Book Thief follows Liesel Meminger, a 12-year-old girl who is taken in by a foster family and begins stealing books as the Second World War closes in. The story is narrated by Death, weary after carrying away countless souls and searching for a story that might restore a belief in humanity.
The musical is based on Markus Zusak's best-selling 2005 novel, which was also adapted as a film in 2013. It premiered at the Octagon Theatre Bolton in 2022, and this London premiere at the Lyric Hammersmith Theatre is based on that original production, with new songs added to the score.
Cast and Creatives
The book is by Jodi Picoult (My Sister's Keeper) and Timothy Allen McDonald (Roald Dahl's James and the Giant Peach), with music and lyrics by Elyssa Samsel and Kate Anderson, who wrote songs for Disney's Olaf's Frozen Adventure. The director is Tom Jackson Greaves, whose credits include the choreography for the West End revival of Rent.
