The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind description
William has been forced to drop out of school because his family is struggling. Despite everything, he manages to learn what he needs to know to help them and his community survive poverty stricken Malawi's terrible famine. The West End premiere of The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind tells the inspiring story of 13-year-old William Kamkwamba, based on the memoir by the author of the same name and the brilliant 2019 Netflix movie directed by Chiwetel Ejiofor. Themes of resilience, hope, determination, and believing in yourself, regardless of what happens, make it a real heart-warmer.
Passionate about science and engineering, William designs and builds a wind turbine from scrap materials to bring fresh water and electricity to his village, and his resourcefulness becomes an inspiration for the whole community. The musical is directed by Lynette Linton. The book and lyrics are by Richy Hughes, and the music comes from Tim Sutton. A Royal Shakespeare Company production, it features Chiwetel Ejiofor as an executive producer with a cast including Alistair Nwachukwu (The Line of Beauty, A Friend of Dorothy, Choir Boy, Netflix's Shadow and Bone) in the lead role as William.
