The Crucible description

About The Crucible at the Gielgud Theatre

Make your way to the National Theatre for a stunning production of Arthur Miller's masterpiece, The Crucible. It's on stage from early June 2023 to September for a strictly limited season and has already gathered a host of dazzling reviews from critics. Arthur Miller's masterpiece is designed to delight, delivering a powerfully gripping parable exploring the abuse of power.

What's the story of The Crucible at the Gielgud Theatre?

In the 1950s the US Senator Senator Joseph McCarthy of Wisconsin sets off a series of investigations and hearings to try to reveal an alleged communist infiltration of various departments in the government. Since then McCarthyism has become the byname in the States for the widely publicised and indiscriminate defamation of character. The resulting plot concerns what happens in the 'good' Christian town of Salem back in 1692, where a group of girls created a legendary religious, moral and legal scandal.

Miller's masterpiece, The Crucible, is a historical drama about the real-life Salem Witch Trials, where a group of young women accused dozens of their fellow townsfolk of being witches. Their proclamations led to a reign of terror led by a man called Danforth, where twenty local folk were executed and many more arrested. It makes a powerful allegory for the paranoid ravings of the McCarthyism that Miller so despised.

Who is starring in The Crucible at the Gielgud Theatre?

The National Theatre production previously starred Brendan Cowell as John Proctor and Erin Doherty as Abigail Williams. The cast for this run is yet to be announced.
