The Guilty description
About the Show
In The Guilty, Joe is a police officer on desk duty in an emergency control room. He takes a 999 call from Emily, a woman in danger, and has to work out from fragmented clues what is happening to her. As the night goes on and the twists mount, he begins to sense that nothing is quite as it seems.
The play is a stage adaptation of the Danish film Den skyldige by Gustav Möller and Emil Nygaard Albertsen. It is performed by a single actor, unfolds in real time and runs for 1 hour 5 minutes with no interval. The Donmar Warehouse production sold out its run at the Donmar in 2026 before transferring to the Harold Pinter Theatre, and The Guardian called it "no less than a white knuckle ride".
Cast and Creatives
The play is written by Chloë Moss, who won the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize for This Wide Night and has written for Call the Midwife and Beyond Paradise. Director Felix Barrett founded the immersive theatre company Punchdrunk, whose productions include Sleep No More, and directed Paranormal Activity in the West End and on Broadway.
Russell Tovey returns to the role of Joe, which he originated at the Donmar. He appeared in The History Boys at the National Theatre and on Broadway and in Angels in America at the National Theatre, and is known on screen for Being Human, Years and Years and Industry.
Why You Should Watch It
