The Hills of California description

About The Hills of California

Jez Butterworth's long-anticipated new piece, The Hills of California, is on its way to the Harold Pinter Theatre for 2024, another treat fresh from the pen of one of the country’s best-respected playwrights. He has collaborated with director Sam Mendes once more to create a play on stage for a strictly limited run from 27th January to 15th June 2024.

What's the story of The Hills of California?

After a roaring success with the multi-award-winning The Ferryman, Jez Butterworth and Sam Mendes are back. This is a touching, sensitive adult play that we predict will prove just as awesome as the rest of Butterworth’s work.

The plot? Roll back time to the legendary summer of 1976. The guest house is called Sea View, but there are no sea views. This place sits far from the ice cream, sea and sand, in a grubby street behind the holiday scenes. The town is Blackpool, and this is the hottest, driest summer for two centuries. You can’t see the sand for the crowds and the seafront is mobbed. The Webb Sisters have come home to their mum’s guest house, where she’s dying in bed upstairs.
