About the Show
The Capitol runs an annual televised contest in which two tributes from each of Panem's districts are sent into an arena to fight until one remains. Katniss Everdeen volunteers when her younger sister is chosen, and is taken with Peeta Mellark to be prepared, presented and then released into the arena, where survival depends partly on what the watching audience makes of her.
This is the first stage adaptation of Suzanne Collins's novel. It opened in November 2025 at Troubadour Canary Wharf Theatre, a 1,200-seat house built in the round for this production, and uses video, illusion and staged combat to place the arena around the audience. John Malkovich appears as President Snow on screen.
Cast and Creatives
The adaptation is by Conor McPherson, writer of The Weir and Girl from the North Country, directed by Matthew Dunster, whose credits include 2:22 A Ghost Story and Hangmen. Miriam Buether designed the set and auditorium, with lighting by Lucy Carter, video by Tal Rosner and illusions by Chris Fisher.
Mia Carragher plays Katniss Everdeen and Euan Garrett plays Peeta Mellark, with Joshua Lacey as Haymitch, Tristan Waterson as Gale, Ruth Everett as Effie Trinket and Stavros Demetraki as Caesar Flickerman.
