The Misanthrope description

This new adaptation of the French writer and actor Molière's 1600s comedy is designed to delight. The star of the show is Sandra Oh, who thrilled us in TV's Killing Eve and has made Hollywood her own. And it is being billed as a 'razor sharp' reimagining of a world-renowned classic. Come and see The Misanthrope at the National Theatre, London, and be startled at how much things have changed in some ways, and how little they've changed in others. The star of the play, Alice, is not afraid to make her opinions known, and because outspoken women are still sometimes frowned upon in the 21st century, the play is totally relevant as well as highly entertaining.

Alice is a talented novelist who despises society's 'hollow' obsession with kindness and respect. The bolder she becomes, the more she speaks out, the worse her relationships become. Colleagues avoid her, friends disapprove, and as she touches on subjects so sensitive they're never talked about, the backlash is brutal. This is the price you pay for being a female who dares speak her mind. Martin Crimp's (Cyrano de Bergerac) sharp-witted new version of Molière's dark comedy is directed by National Theatre Director Indhu Rubasingham (The Father and the Assassin), with Paul Chahidi (TV's The Night Manager, Phaedre, Wicked Little Letters) and Abigail Cruttenden (A Man for All Seasons, Handbagged) joining Oh along with a talented creative team. A story that never grows old.
