James makes a huge snowman in his garden. His chilly friend comes alive at midnight, taking the boy on a fantastic journey flying across snowy landscapes to meet father Christmas and having all sorts of adventures along the way. This legendary production was created by the late John Coates. The animated Christmas version won Best Animated Short Film at the 1983 Academy Awards along with a BAFTA TV Award, ultimately ranking 71st in the 100 Greatest British Television Programmes. The 1978 book sold more than five and a half million copies in 15 different languages, one of the best-sellers of all time. The Director is Bill Alexander, with music and lyrics by Howard Blake, lighting from Tim Mitchell, design by Ruari Murchison and choreography by Robert North. Our verdict? Delightful!
