The Young Team description
About the Show
Azzy has wanted to be in the Young Team since he was a boy. Born and raised in Airdrie, North Lanarkshire, he is drawn to the YTP (Young Team Posse) by the excitement, the sense of belonging and the easy access to drink and drugs. As he rises through the ranks, he has to decide whether the gang is where he belongs or just where he has ended up, knowing that walking away is not an option.
The Young Team is a world premiere adaptation of Graeme Armstrong's best-selling, award-winning debut novel, first published in 2020. Co-produced by the National Theatre of Scotland and the Lyric Hammersmith Theatre, it opens at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, plays in Hammersmith and then moves to the Citizens Theatre in Glasgow. It explores masculinity, friendship, loyalty and violence among boys and young men in working-class Scotland.
Cast and Creatives
The stage version is by Scottish playwright Kieran Hurley, whose plays include Beats, The Enemy and Square Go. It is directed by Rachel O'Riordan, artistic director of the Lyric Hammersmith Theatre, whose productions include Iphigenia in Splott.
