About the Show
Floria Tosca, a celebrated singer, and the painter Mario Cavaradossi are devoted to each other and to their art. When Cavaradossi hides an escaped political prisoner, the couple come under the control of Baron Scarpia, Rome's feared Chief of Police. Scarpia has Cavaradossi arrested and tortured, then offers Tosca a deal: her lover's life in exchange for herself. Her answer decides the fate of all three.
Puccini's Tosca, with a libretto by Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica after Victorien Sardou's play, premiered in Rome in 1900 and includes the arias Vissi d'arte and E lucevan le stelle. This is a revival of Oliver Mears's production, which sets the story in a contemporary, war-torn Rome. It is sung in Italian with English surtitles and lasts about three hours, including two intervals.
Cast and Creatives
The production is directed by Oliver Mears, Director of Opera at the Royal Ballet and Opera, whose work for the company also includes Rigoletto, with sets by Simon Lima Holdsworth, costumes by Ilona Karas and lighting by Fabiana Piccioli. Daniel Oren, an Israeli conductor known for the Italian repertoire, conducts.
Polish soprano Aleksandra Kurzak, who has appeared at the Metropolitan Opera and the Vienna State Opera, sings Tosca. Albanian tenor Saimir Pirgu, whose career includes the Salzburg Festival and La Scala, is Cavaradossi, and British baritone Christopher Maltman, known for roles including Don Giovanni and Simon Boccanegra, is Scarpia.
