Tosca - English National Opera description
Love opera? Never seen it? Either way this wonderfully tense new production of Puccini's beloved story, Tosca, lands at the London Coliseum courtesy of English National Opera. ENO's Artistic Director Annilese Miskimmon has reimagined the lovely old story of love, power and sacrifice, setting it in a troubled modern-day European state where civil strife is the name of the game. Grammy winners Axelle Fanyo and Chaz'men Williams-Ali star as the key characters, Tosca and her lover Cavaradossi, and the Children's Chorus comes from Marlborough Primary School.
The action takes place at a concert hall where the opera singer Floria is about to meet her lover Mario in secret. But the corrupt police chief Scarpia spoils everything, transforming a place of peace, love and gorgeous music into a horrific site of violence and terror. Over just one terrible night, Tosca is forced to fight not just for her love but also for her honour and her life. Conducted by Ben Glassberg, we also have Christopher Purves and Craig Colclough singing Scarpia, Angelotti played by Alaric Green, Sacristan by Robert Hayward and Spoletta by Osian Wyn Bowen. The role of Sciarrone is shared by Steffan Lloyd Owen / Christopher Nairne. The perfect opera for beginners and a huge treat for fans.
