Un ballo in maschera - Royal Ballet and Opera description
Un ballo in maschera, Giuseppe Verdi's operatic masterpiece, returns to the Royal Opera House in a production that places human frailty and moral conflict centre stage. Where political power meets private desire, the opera traces the ruin of Riccardo, a governor whose love for Amelia — bound to his most trusted counsellor Renato — becomes a source of fatal vulnerability. As conspirators close in and personal honour is shattered, Verdi's score rises to heights of devastating emotional force.
Director Katharina Thoma brings a keen theatrical intelligence to the staging, while conductor Antonio Pappano — widely celebrated for his command of the Italian repertoire — leads the Royal Opera Orchestra with characteristic authority. Previously acclaimed for productions of La traviata and Otello at this very house, Pappano is a formidable guide through Verdi's dramatic landscape. With Freddie De Tommaso, Lianna Haroutounian, and Luca Salsi heading the cast, Un ballo in maschera promises to be one of the most compelling operatic events of the season.
