Waitress description

About Waitress

As songwriter Sara Bareilles herself said, she'd love to come to London with the show. As she mentioned on Twitter, “We are hopeful for a home very soon! London is so high on our wish list... we just need a theater!”. Now her wish has come true, and Waitress The Musical is in the West End at long last. Sara herself is making her way to the West End for her theatreland debut, joining the London Waitress cast at the Adelphi Theatre and playing the role of Jenna and reprising her Broadway role.

What's the story of Waitress?

You've guessed it... this splendid musical stars a waitress. In fact it stars three waitresses who work their fingers to the bone at Joe’s pie diner. Life is pretty dull, just one day after another, each like the last. But Jenna really loves baking, which takes her away from Earl, her nasty abusive husband. When Jenna falls pregnant she realises this is the time for action. She decides to skip town before her pregnancy is discovered, begins an affair with the new doctor in town, and makes all sorts of mistakes along the way. But when you're fighting for a better life, any recipe that helps you resolve her problems is worth making. Or is it?

Who is on the Waitress creative team?

Jessie Nelson wrote the book and Sara Bareilles the music and song lyrics. Diane Paulus directs and choreography comes from Lorin Latarro. Adrienne Shelly is the Film Writer and Nadia Digiallonardo deals with Music Supervision & Arrangements. The Waitress Band does the Orchestrations and Scott Pask the Set Design. Costume design is by Suttirat Anne Larlarb and lighting design by Ken Billington. Jonathan Deans does the Sound Design, Richard Mawbey the Wig And Make-Up Design, and Nancy Harrington is the Associate Director. Barry And Fran Weissler, Norton And Elayne Herrick, Feste Investments B.V. and Alecia Parker produce, along with a list of several more producers.

What are people saying about Waitress?

  • Time Out - “A bittersweet drama about human frailty that’s also a wildly OTT sex comedy.”
  • London Theatre - “Here is an intimate everyday story of the power of workplace friendships and the joys of pie-baking - but not, as you might fear, full of sugar but also containing quite a lot of spice.”
  • The Guardian - “A bittersweet Broadway musical served warm in the West End.”
