We Have Always Lived in the Castle description
About the Show
Six years after most of the Blackwood family died of arsenic poisoning at the dinner table, 18-year-old Merricat lives in the family house with her older sister Constance and their Uncle Julian, cut off from the village nearby. Constance was tried for the poisonings and acquitted, but the villagers have not forgiven the family. The sisters' careful routines hold until their cousin Charles arrives.
We Have Always Lived in the Castle is a world premiere adaptation of the 1962 novel by Shirley Jackson, author of The Haunting of Hill House. The novel was adapted for the cinema in 2018, and this new stage version closes the Lyric Hammersmith Theatre's 2027 season.
Cast and Creatives
The adaptation is by Alistair McDowall, whose plays include Pomona and X. The director is Sarah Frankcom, former artistic director of the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester, where her productions included Hamlet with Maxine Peake in the title role.
Why You Should Watch It
