Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf description
Some plays have such a powerful impact they enter the halls of fame more or less instantly. This is one of them, written by Edward Albee and premiering on Broadway in autumn 1962. Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf is back in the capital to dissect a troubled marriage so brutally you'll be cringing with horrified delight. Meet middle aged Martha and George, whose relationship is well and truly on the rocks. Little do the younger couple Nick and Honey know that a simple invitation for drinks will pull them into the pair's toxic tornado before spitting them out in a finale that'll make you wince. Being set in the round, it is even more intimate than usual.
The drama won 1963's Tony for Best Play along with the 1962–3 New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best Play. It lands in theatres around the world regularly, seldom off the stage. This time around it's a fresh new production with some serious stars on board. We have the Emmy and Golden Globe winning Gillian Anderson (The Crown, Sex Education, A Streetcar Named Desire) and Emmy and Tony Award winner Billy Crudup (Almost Famous, The Morning Show, The Elephant Man), plus Olivier and Tony winning director Marianne Elliot who thrilled audiences with her work on War Horse, Angels in America, and Company.
