A Little Life description

About A Little Life

Your destination is the Harold Pinter Theatre, which is proud to announce it’s the home of a long, harrowing and inspiring play you won’t forget in a hurry. This one will be in your mind for a very long time. Introducing A Little Life, on stage in London for a limited run for 2023.

James Norton stars as the troubled lawyer Jude St Francis in the respected director Ivo van Hove’s critically acclaimed adaptation of the Booker Prize nominated novel by Hanya Yanagihara. This is the play’s English language stage premiere and the anticipation is already mounting.

What's the story of A Little Life?

A Little Life is Hanya Yanagihara’s best seller, a story that has inspired a million sales. The Tony and Olivier Award-winning director Ivo van Hove scored hits with Hedda Gabler, Network, and A View from the Bridge, and he first brought this story to the stage in 2018, when it premiered with the Toneelgroep Amsterdam theatre company. Since then it’s wowed audiences in New York and Edinburgh.

The plot? Meet JB, Willem, and Malcolm. JB is an artist, Willem is an aspiring actor, and Malcolm is an architect, all young and struggling to survive. Jude is their friend, and his life experiences have been completely different. Jude is a talented lawyer with a hidden past, a bad limp from what he told them was a car accident, and no family. His childhood is a closed book.

As the friends get older they gradually get a clearer picture of Jude and the extent of his suffering. He has been damaged, and the result is one of the most devastating stories many of the fans who read the book have ever experienced. While it counts amongst the favourites of many, it takes courage to read the book... and the play is equally powerful.

Who is starring in A Little Life?

James Norton is known and loved for countless excellent roles including Happy Valley and Grantchester, both on the BBC. He is joined by cast members Omari Douglas from It’s a Sin, and Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club, who plays JB. Luke Thompson from TV’s Bridgerton plays Willem and Zach Wyatt from The Witcher plays Malcolm. The rest of the cast comprises Elliot Cowan from TV’s The Crown and the stage’s 2:22 A Ghost Story, Zubin Varla who thrilled theatreland in Tammy Faye and Equus, Nathalie Armin whose work on Force Majeure and The Doctor caused a stir, and Emilio Doorgasingh, known for Best of Enemies and The Kite Runner.

Who is on the A Little Life creative team?

Jan Versweyveld is the Set Designer and also does the Lighting. An D'Huys handles the costumes and Eric Sleichim the music and sound. Julia Horan CDG is responsible for the casting and Ivo van Hove directs.
